What made Gospel music distinct from other African music, was the absence of the drum. Slave masters banned drums in the US, because it was a form of communicating. This created the feet stomping, the creaky floor boards that became the percussion. The hand clapping, and the whole body as an instrument. TODAY-the drum is the most prominent feature in modern gospel, and its prevalence, impacts the way gospel music used to feel. Timing was not measure for measure in a programmed predictable way. If the drum was a synonym for the heart, nobody living has a pulse that beats exactly the same. Neither did old gospel music.
