What makes a Halloween costume racist? It seems rather clear to me that any costume where you are specifically dressing up as another race (hint: it requires makeup to change your skin colour, and you arent going as the Blue Man Group) is probably racist. However, what if you are dressing up as a specific historical figure, or profession so to speak? Ive seen articles stating that dressing up as a Geisha is racist. So would a ninja also be racist? This seems a bit much. How about a person of non-European descent going as a Knight? Knights were pretty much exclusive to white countries, but I cant possibly see how that would be racist. Then how about going as an Indian Brave? I feel like that is probably racist, but why? How is it different than most Samurai costumes? Although the headdress, tomahawk, and buckskins are probably rather historically inaccurate, so are most historical costumes. If you can only dress up as either something scary, or something from your own racial history, then I feel like that is racist itself. Ultimately intent is probably important. If youre trying to emphasize the Arab-ness of your Genie from Aladdin costume, instead of the Genie-ness, then thats probably racist. But wheres the line? How do you tell? Culturally sensitive liberal friends, I need your input.
