What makes a wave hollow and good to surf on? The reef below. Weather it is Hanalei or Pipeline the reef controls how the wave breaks. When I took these vid clips a year ago these giant one ton five foot tall mound corals were alive and healthy under the waves at Hanalei. Now they have died of disease or were knocked off of the reef during RIMPAC last August by the sonar blasting. You will see that this will change the waves as these corals drag on the underside of the wave making it hollow. With the corals gone the actual reef is deeper and the wave have changed. As surfers we need to take care of the reefs to take care of the surf!
