What makes for an epic show? What elements come together to elevate a gig to that level? Needless to say, the artist has to be on. If they arent firing with all cylinders, that will likely cut the odds right there. Usually, although not necessarily, theres a critical mass of audience, and a level of receptiveness, that pushes it up. Those two things, the artist and audience, obviously engage in a feedback loop, and when theyre in sync, its magic. That said, more is needed to hit the next level. Part of it is having a good opening act that primes the pump, so when the headliner takes the stage the crowd is ready to rock at full speed. Another is a raison dêtre - something making the particular event extra-special, beyond just really good performance. Last night at The Dock had the right opener in Dynamic Inkline, with the Gunpoets own DJ Double A keeping people grooving before and in between. It was also the first time the GPz performed there - at the place where they started out and made their name - since the venue had reopened. With a sold-out crowd packing the house wall-to-wall and bar-to-stage, and the band in top form, that was more than enough to push this one over the top.
