What makes me post a random Hasidic English/Yiddish word of the random time? So it happens like this. I get up early and begin to prepare a salad for the nights dinner. I get the pickles out of the fridge, my salivary glands juice up, I begin to chop, listen to Buble on Pandora and think to myself: that Seth; when will he stop criticizing me for calling a pickle a pickle? Its like every time -- I say Seth, have a pickle! and he says mom, its not a pickle! and I say Seth, hack nisht a chaynik! And then I think - maybe theres something to the word? I check the packaging, it says cucumber. So then I check the Google, it says you schmuck; pickle is a process through which you sorta marinate food. And then I realize --- ah, the word we used for cucumber was so strange! While we sometimes said the Yiddish ugerke, we also adopted pickle from English! And once I realize that the word I use is indeed unusual, that that American boy Seth was onto something, my salivary glands get even more zaftig as I attack the keyboard (in my word document, Ben Schapiro) mostly to find out if its just me or if its everyone that says that, but also to just share this random pearl of linguistic realization with other random farnatishe yiden.
