What makes the word nigger offensive? The Latin word for black is niger (the word nigger, but with only one letter G) and the Spanish word for black, and the Portuguese word for dark is negro; the the Italian word for black is nero (the word negro without the letter G) which means as dark as ink, and the Danish word for black is neger; the Romanian word for black is negru. In English, words that begin with the letters N-I-G usually has something to do with darkness. For example, nigrosine is a black dye. Nigrescence is the process of becoming black. Night meaning darkness. There is also Niger and Nigeria, which are two countries in Africa. What about the word nigger? Its considered a disrespectful term for black or dark-skinned people. But what makes that word disrespectful? White people have called us Moors, niggers, colored, Negroes, blacks, African-Americans, etc. But when exactly, and why exactly did we decide that nigger was the worse thing that a white person could ever call a black person? The word black means evil, depressing, marked by anger, dishonorable, harmful, etc. Why were we not offended at anyone who ever referred to us as black? When white people took away our names and forced us to wear their names (which we continue to use until this day) in order to claim us as their property, why were we not offended by that? Why did we instead choose to become offended by the word nigger?
