What many atheists who were never believers can never understand - TopicsExpress

What many atheists who were never believers can never understand is the power religion has over those it holds. Religion uses our weaknesses against us in our weakest moments to offer help like an ambulance chasing lawyer looking for his next mark. Dramatic conversion stories are the bread and butter of the evangelical movement. They provide inspiring tales of divine intervention which comfort individuals who are desperate for hope in times of personal crisis. It convinces us that we are incapable of such kindness on our own. It perverts the empathy of human beings for one another as the hand of God reaching out to the lost and suffering. When you are down and feeling hopeless the feeling of acceptance that divine forgiveness presents is an enticing mental offer. It acts as a salve on our emotions while it infects us connecting our sense of well-being to the belief that has saved us from the pain of our sinful existence. Religion takes the common decency of the caring and empathic and convinces them that the actions we take to benefit our fellow humankind are to be credited to our respective faith and not to the people acting in kindness. All along, it was just us helping each other and somewhere along the line we traded simple human kindness and compassion with the rigid and unwavering morality of a belief that cannot be questioned by the mind of men who created it in the first place. Thieving and conniving it has embedded itself so deeply in our cultures that removing it threatens the dependency of those who have become addicted to the codependent nature of faith. They are so enamored with the complexity of their delusion, they will do anything to hold onto the lie. These are the truly lost…and no one can save them but themselves. Unfortunately, their belief has taught them to beat down their own mind in submission to the idea that they are nothing without their God. There could be no more perfect form of slavery. -Timothy Havener
