What might a collective of artists look like, if they began with a refusal to sell their art? (Ive mentioned here before, that I dont sell, but ask for contributions and offer work as a perpetual loan) My proposals would be to: have a web page to show and promote work. Make arrangements of collective ownership, that is, so work couldnt be sold by those who claim them. The collective would retain all rights for reproduction, etc. to PREVENT comodification. Id want to promote artists opting out of the gallery gatekeeper system. Showing in galleries--can offer percentage of voluntary contributions equivalent to sales, so galleries would have incentive to show, but with understanding that the work was given as a perpetual loan, not a sale of ownership rights. With an association of such collectives, could be benefits in buying supplies in bulk, and of offering display and showcase openings. Lots of potential for artists who get over their dependence on the predator capitalist system where, the infinitesimal few make it to the top, cause they get picked by the gatekeepers, who think aesthetic value is a works potential dollar worth. Why cant artists be as creative in what they do with our work, as we are in making it? I want this, I really want to see this happen.
