What sin did Jesus not pay for? Quick Hit! 28 so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him. We like to quote Hebrews 9:27 when we are sharing our faith to an unbeliever. They need to be careful about how they deal with the salvation we are presenting, and then we quote that verse to them. But, not only is it a sure thing that we die once and then face judgment. But in the same way, Christ died once. That death paid for all our sins. That one sacrifice paid for every sin we have committed in our lives and every sin we will commit in our lives. That one time death was sufficient. It did the trick. It met the need. If it did not, then our salvation is dependent on us. Let me say quite emphatically, our salvation does not depend on us in any way at all. It is totally dependent on the death Jesus died on the cross. That one time death that paid for all our sins. Let’s take this one a little deeper. 23 It was necessary, then, for the copies of the heavenly things to be purified with these sacrifices, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. 24 For Christ did not enter a sanctuary made with human hands that was only a copy of the true one; he entered heaven itself, now to appear for us in God’s presence. 25 Nor did he enter heaven to offer himself again and again, the way the high priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with blood that is not his own. 26 Otherwise Christ would have had to suffer many times since the creation of the world. But he has appeared once for all at the culmination of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of himself. 27 Just as people are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment, 28 so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him. Meaning – You may have never considered this, but the tabernacle that Moses built and served in while in the desert was a copy of the true tabernacle in Heaven. In that tabernacle, Jesus offered His blood for our sins. Scripture doesn’t tell us when He offered His blood on the altar of Heaven, but I would lean towards it happening after His resurrection and before He appeared to the disciples. The important thing is that the offering for sin was once and it was sufficient for all sin. There is no need for further sacrifice. It is kind of neat that Jesus death is compared to our own mortality. Once we die, that’s it. There is no “do over.” Well the same is true for Jesus’ death. It is done. There isn’t a sequel coming. Wait, there is a sequel coming. Jesus will come back to bring salvation to us who have believed. Right now we hope in eternity. When He returns, our hope is turned into sight. We will have what we hope for. Application – I am not sure that I can say because of this passage that you should do this or that. But what I can say is that this is too important of a principle to pass by and not delve into. If you think that your being saved or remaining a child of God is dependent on you at all, then you are gladly mistaken. I say gladly on purpose. Look at scripture. Know scripture. Words mean things and it is important to read scripture carefully and get the correct meaning. Jesus death was sufficient to pay for all your sins. We have no part in our salvation. We trust and Jesus has taken care of the rest. Relax in that fact today. Rest in the surety that if you have trusted Christ, then you are His and nothing can separate you from the position you have in Christ. Not even yourself. You have been adopted. Once adopted, there is no going back. I hope this will encourage you today and help you have assurance and be able to move beyond this issue today.
