What steps do you think someone she reasonably take before selling - TopicsExpress

What steps do you think someone she reasonably take before selling a horse to insure its welfare? I ask because I recently went to look at a mare that some people had purchased just 6-months before. I had seen photo and video of the horse prior to them owning it. The decline in the horses health over a 6-month period was astounding. They were clearly uneducated about horse care and even confused about why the horse looked so bad and had lost around 150 pounds. Of course being a hot arab mare they did say when they fed her more she became too much for them to handle. I wondered what went on that led the prior owner to sell these people a horse that was so far beyond their abilities. A year or so ago I was looking to purchase a dog and had multiple breeders ask me to fill out 4-5 page applications asking about care, training, my home environment experience with the breed etc... before they would even consider talking to me about a dog. At the time I thought it was a bit intrusive but in retrospect I thought... hmmm what might you learn about a prospective horse buyer by using a similar process? Also, what other methods have people used to protect their horses when selling them?
