What struck me while making “Skanks” was the “community” - TopicsExpress

What struck me while making “Skanks” was the “community” part of the phrase “Community Theater.” The cast and crew of “Skanks in a One Horse Town” were mostly from towns in Alabama and all outsiders to varying degrees. But the place where they felt they belonged, the insular world the company had created in Birmingham was progressive and open-minded and welcoming. The film is an attempt to examine and understand the power of their community. While shooting and editing the film I was struck by the near universal redemption that theater provided the cast and their attempts to find joy whatever the obstacle. No matter the difficulty with their families of origin, the cast had a surrogate family to support, love and celebrate them. And they put on a whale of a show! My sincerest thanks go out to Billy Ray Brewton and the cast and crew of “Skanks in a One Horse Town.” I’m grateful for their honesty and openness, and for their spectacular senses of humor. David McMahon is originally from Birmingham, Alabama. “Skanks” is his first film as a solo director. He previously co-directed “Bayou Blue” with Alix Lambert. He has a Master of Fine Arts from the University of California-San Diego and co-founded Apparition Productions, which produced both “Apparition” by Anne Washburn and “Deathbed” by Mark Schultz Off-Broadway. His film SKANKS is included in the ALL ACCESS AND VIP PASS or you can purchase individual tickets and see the trailer at: sched.co/1lHudA5 #PDXFF14
