What takes a licking and keeps on ticking (on a geiger counter, that is)? Why, Chernobyl, of course!! The neighboring town of Pripyat (pop. 49,360) was evacuated in 1986 when 5% of the radioactive reactor core seeped into the environment. That core is still exposed and nearly as radioactive today. An exclusion zone is in effect, but British filmmaker Danny Cooke went inside and made an amazing little short film, “Postcards from Pripyat, Chernobyl” about what it looks like today, including footage shot by aerial drones. He was shooting footage for “60 Minutes,” but made this as an artistic side piece. It’s amazing to see vegetation reclaiming the urban landscape after nearly thirty years. As I understand it, the radiation levels are low enough that you can visit for a few hours or perhaps a day without much of a burden. I also don’t know what the half-lives of the exposed radioactive substances are; probably centuries long if not millennia. Chernobyl: Nice place to visit, but I wouldn’t want to live there!!
