What to Watch: Week 10 Aaaaand we’re back! Sorry for the lapse, kids. I was actually going to post a “What to Watch” last week, but as I looked over the schedule I realized that...wow, there really wasnt much to watch. So, this week looks better, and we’re gonna get right back into things. Here we go… Thursday, October 30 7:30 PM - 2 Florida State @ Louisville (ESPN) *FSU is undefeated, but there’s a reason they’re no. 2: the ‘Noles have had a lot of close scrapes on a relatively weak schedule. Louisville has had a rougher road thus far, having lost close games against Clemson and Virginia. At 6-2, Louisville needs to defeat FSU and cannot afford another loss. FSU, on the other hand, is running out of chances to prove that they deserve to be no. 1. SATURDAY, November 4 12:00 PM Northwestern @ Iowa (B1G) *At 3-4, the Northwestern Wildcats have been one of the great mysteries of the 2014 CFB season. After dropping their first two to NIU and Pac-12 weakling Cal, they won three straight, toppling PSU and Wisconsin as they did, before dropping their last two. Iowa has had a more consistently successful season; the Hawkeyes are 5-2, their only losses coming against Iowa State and Maryland. Northwestern is really the team to watch here: the ‘Cats are three wins away from bowl eligibility. With two of their remaining five games coming against Michigan and Notre Dame, this may be a must-win game. Maryland @ Penn State (ESPN2) *After strong starts, both Maryland and Penn State are in free fall. Maryland has lost two of their last three, going down against OSU and Wisconsin and squeaking out a narrow victory over Iowa. PSU has fared worse; after winning their first four, the Nittany Lions have dropped three straight, losing to every serious opponent theyve faced. Both PSU and Maryland are now safely played out of conference title contention. PSU is still two wins out from bowl eligibility. 3:30 PM 10 TCU @ 20 West Virginia (ESPN2) *At 6-1, TCU has been one of the many big surprises this year, their only loss thus far coming against Baylor. At 6-2 WVU is neck-and-neck with them. As both teams have yet to play Big 12 conference leader K-State, this game has serious title implications in America’s most competitive conference. Virginia @ Georgia Tech (ESPNU) *After a promising start, Virginia has dropped two straight to conference opponents and looks to be in a tailspin. GT hasnt fared much better, having lost two of their last three. Despite this, both teams remain firmly in contention in a middling conference (the Coastal Division has four teams at 2-2 in conference). However, either team would likely need to win out for a legitimate shot, as both have already lost to division leader Duke. Florida vs. 9 Georgia (CBS) *Alright, let’s face it: more than likely this won’t be much of a game. Even without Todd Gurley, Georgia is likely more than a match for the depleted, directionless Gators. However, this game is noteworthy for its implications, as it could well be Will Muschamp’s final game at Florida. 7:00 PM 4 Auburn @ 7 Ole Miss (ESPN) *Now THIS is an SEC match-up worth watching! Auburn is 6-1, 3-1 in conference, which astonishingly places them in fourth in the crowded SEC West. Ahead of them in second is Ole Miss, 7-1 and reeling from their first loss of the season against LSU. In a brutal division overloaded with talent, neither team can afford another loss on their way to the inevitable showdown with Miss State. 7:30 PM Stanford @ 5 Oregon (FOX) *Say it with me, kids: NEVER COUNT OUT A RIVALRY GAME. In the past few years, Stanford and Oregon have been the two most powerful teams in the Pac-12, and as such a heated rivalry has developed between the Pac-12’s best offensive machine and its most brutal defense. This year, the stakes are as high as ever. At 5-3 with two conference losses, Stanford faces an uphill battle to claim the Pac-12 North, with UCLA and Utah ahead after the showdown with Oregon. Oregon, on the other hand, has only a single loss but has looked far less invincible than they did last year. A stumble by either team may well seal the division for the other. 8:00 PM Oklahoma State @ Kansas State (ABC) *After a strong start to the season, OSU has been trounced two weeks in a row, and is teetering on the edge of contention in the crowded Big 12. They face their toughest test yet this week against K-State: the Wildcats are 6-1 and undefeated in conference play. An OSU victory would vault the Cowboys back into title contention, while upsetting the fragile balance at the top of the conference. 10:30 PM 14 Arizona @ 25 UCLA (ESPN) *At 6-1 Arizona is rolling, sitting behind rival ASU in the Pac-12 South only because they’ve played fewer games. UCLA, on the other hand, has had a rocky season, and is currently 3-2 in conference. The Bruins likely cannot afford another loss and remain in divisional contention, despite having defeated conference leader ASU. 11:00 PM 18 Utah @ 15 Arizona State (FS1) *At 6-1, 3-1 in conference, Utah State sits tied for second in the Pac-12 South with Arizona. ASU sits in first, by virtue of having played one more game than the other two. In this crowded division, neither team can afford so much as another loss and hope to remain in contention for long.
