What to do if there is an earthuake Earthquakes are a frequent occurrence in Japan and severe earthquakes may result in casualties. It is important to be fully prepared and to know what to do when an earthquake occurs. Preparing for an earthquake - Prepare an emergency kit. You should keep the following items stored in a backpack which you can easily access in case of an emergency: Drinking water, instant and canned food, can opener, deposit book, cash, medicine and relevant prescriptions, portable radio, torch and spare batteries, lighter, thick gloves, towel, blankets, jacket, sweater, underwear, copies of important documents (passport, visa, alien registration card, health insurance card) [and for parents with babies] powdered milk, disposable nappies, and a feeding bottle. - Know the location of your nearest emergency evacuation centre. You can find this information on the “Disaster Prevention Map [防災マップ] through the Iwaki City Hall Website (Living Guide>Preparing for Disaster>Earthquakes). - Participate in disaster drills held in your neighbourhood. - Obtain an Emergency Contact Card from City Hall. This card lists emergency contact numbers and has information on how to prepare for disasters. What to do during an earthquake - Stay away from furniture that may fall on you. Shelter under a strong table or desk. - Keep doors open to assure that you have an exit. - After the ground stops shaking turn off any stoves, gas or heaters you may be using. - Loose tiles or glass may fall as you are exiting the building, so exit without rushing and cover your head with a cushion or bag. - Get up to date information from radio or TV. If authorities call for it, go to your nearest evacuation centre. There they will provide water, food, medical supplies and other necessities. Everyone is welcome to use this service.
