What type of government should we have? Everyone seems upset - TopicsExpress

What type of government should we have? Everyone seems upset with the government we have today. But, how do we change it? Should we focus on throwing out the thugs and finding and electing leaders who are capable and will serve the needs of those who vote for them? Do we throw the bums out and replace them with people we think will do a better job? If that is our approach, how do we deal with the fact that the other side is likely to regard our chosen leaders as the new bums? This approach also tends to create factions of people with attempts to marginalize the people who are not part of your faction. Just listen to 5 advertisements in any election and you will see the subtle and not so subtle comments about the other side in an attempt to marginalize them with the implication their needs are, (and to some extent they are), inferior and less deserving. I am starting to wonder if the approach we take to elections, (trying to find better people to elect), isnt our problem. Perhaps we should focus our efforts on building a citizenry that refuses to marginalize any group of people or their concerns. This doesnt mean people will always get what they want. I just means we dont make other people feel inferior or less deserving because they want something we dont want to pay for. And, it means we dont argue for the things we want by implying that we are more deserving. We dont argue that meeting our needs is somehow right and meeting the needs of others is somehow wrong. If the focus of our political discussions were to change from finding the right people to lead to instead a focus on understanding the needs of people in a way that did not dismiss their concerns as inferior or less deserving, do you think this might change the nature of politics? If so, would that change be positive? Let me know what you think.
