What types of places do you guys prefer to go to to get into the woods? I apologize if someone has brought this up before. I did a search and didnt really see this question. I ask because I live just outside DC. Not in the city, in the suburbs, but its all developed or private property. Ive done a lot in outdoors, but mostly on private land or camping as I kayak down the river. I do have access to the AT and have frequently gone out there and into backcountry. But, if I were to cut down a sapling or something, somebody would have an aneurysm. Most places freak out when you tie a tarp or hammock rope around a tree. Needless to say, there isnt really an option to practice shelter building or cutting anything for that matter in places like that. What types of places offer wilderness experiences for you guys thats close to where you live?
