What value do memorials play in your life? Memorials are basically monuments that assist our memory to something from the past. The purposes of memorials are unique to themselves. Recently Kathy and I stood on the bank of the Nile River and saw a memorial to Ghandi. Another time we were traveling in North Carolina where we visited a couple of memorials in New Bern. One of those is the birth place of Pepsi Cola. A few years ago a memorial was dedicated in Littleton, Colorado commemorating a tragedy at Columbine High School. It’s a beautiful memorial to those who lost their lives, with numerous scriptures etched in. Joshua 4 records for us the erecting of two memorials at the crossing of the Jordan River. Joshua 4:3 ‘Take up for yourselves twelve stones from here out of the middle of the Jordan, from the place where the priests’ feet are standing firm, and carry them over with you and lay them down in the lodging place where you will lodge tonight.’ This was a public memorial for the entire nation to observe. The stones were taken from the river bed and placed where Israel camped after having crossed the thing that could have been a hindrance to obtaining what God had promised. When a church burns a mortgage, its memorial to a hindrance that could have kept that fellowship from being free to give more to evangelism, discipleship, or equipping people to do the work of ministry. One purpose for a memorial is that it encourages us that we not only go through something and be victorious, but we can experience that again with victory! Memorials are wonderful for churches. Memorials also serve as testimonies to the world. That’s why for Evangelical Christians, our crosses are empty, just like His tomb. Signs and wonders are memorials too. Empty wheel chairs, vacated hospital beds, become memorials that testify of the power of God. What are your memorials?
