What was Palpatines actual objective? I mean, okay, hes created this whole elaborate scheme: - Manipulated the Trade Federation, created a political crisis on Naboo, started a war, and then orchestrated the counterattack, all as a pretext to prompting a vote of No Confidence in the old Chancellor so as to assume the role himself. - Manipulated the other secessionist factions - the mecha-guys, the Banking Clans, etc. - to create a civil war, then staged assassination attempts and manipulated the Jedi to get his sole credible opponent, Amidala, out of the way, and then manipulated Binks to propose the act of Senate that would assign him emergency powers. Destroyed the secessionist movement. - Manipulated the Jedi Council to have Skywalker made into a Jedi and placed under his direct influence, then groomed him to be a fellow Sith and to assassinate the Jedi order. - Covertly organised the creation of a clone army by the Kaminoans through a deniable agent, and manipulated the secessionists to design the weapon that he would end up building with the Republics own finances, thus giving himself the war machine he would need to personally maintain control over the budding Empire and to justify finally disbanding the Senate and granting himself supreme permanent power. Its a *big* job, and takes him years to execute. So, to what end? I mean, hes achieved every meaningful part of his plan by the end of Revenge of the Sith. Hes the unquestioned master of the galaxy, hes murdered every credible rival, hes swept aside all opposition. So he spends *twenty years* doing *nothing* but securing power? I mean, I get that power is an objective in itself for some, but theres a sense of something... grander? in him. He might simply have wanted to destroy the Jedi, to prove the rightness of the Dark Side, but he effectively achieved that when Skywalker killed everyone off at the end of Revenge. He didnt then need to entrench himself as a huge target just to make a point. The idea that he had no real *purpose* in this plan, that he went to all this length just to sit on a throne for twenty years and say I won, is disappointing. But while he certainly *seems* to still have a sense of purpose in the original trilogy, something hes working towards, I honestly havent the faintest conception what it could be.
