What was that again? My sister was visiting us from the Democratic Republic of Congo. We spent a wonderful week listening to stories about the enchanting life in that faraway country that we’d read about only in ‘Phantom’ comics as children. As she was leaving, she handed me a package and said ‘this is for you.’ To my delight, what I found inside was a fabulous NOKIA mobile phone. That evening, I made my way to the Idea outlet to get me a SIM card. There was just one other prospective client at the store who was looking for a handset. He was one of those who cannot make up their mind easily. Nor did he know much about mobile phones. And so I watched him impatiently, pointing at one handset after another and enquiring about the features and prices. The salesman obviously was not the owner and I could see his interest as well as patience wear thin after a while. Very soon, he was quoting prices without even looking at the buyer. “6500, 8000, 12,800…”. About this time the eyes of the ‘difficult’ buyer fell on a silvery piece lying in the showcase. “How much is this one?” Without changing his tone or shifting his eyes from whatever he had been looking at, (definitely not the buyer) the salesman replied “that is the remote for the AC”.
