What we are really dealing here is the same old story: Palestinian radicals commit a terrible but localised crime and Israel responds, whether it can identify the perpetrators or not, with collective punishment using overwhelming force, which inevitably results in Palestinian innocents being killed, maimed and wounded, on an appalling scale (not to mention the material damages). That so many Israelis and their supporters see morality in huge scale, collective punishment, has always been deeply disturbing, reminiscent as it is of the psychology of colonial regimes. Such ready acceptance of the legitimacy and necessity of such a response is indicative of the relative lack of humanity that pervades contemporary Israeli society and informs its political discourse. Such a policy is of course immoral, but it is also terribly cynical. To systematically blame the Palestinian leadership and Palestinian institutions for the terrible actions of individuals and groups that are beyond their control has always been absurd, just as punishing innocent Palestinians on a mass scale is criminal.
