What we mean by the term ulamā is primarily scholars of Islam, which includes all scholars, such as philosophers, theologians, phycist, chemist, and astronomers, who carry out their scientific activities within the Islamic worldview. Therefore, we do not mean merely its contemporary usage, which includes only the traditional Islamic scholars as a class of clergy which is indeed a corrupt usage. -Prof. Alparslan Açikgenç, Islamic Science Towards a Definition.
