What we offer vegans: We’ve recently taken on two new, vegan - TopicsExpress

What we offer vegans: We’ve recently taken on two new, vegan members of staff. (We’re a fairly mixed bunch at Naturally Good Food – they rub shoulders quite happily with our dairy-farmer and other carnivores.) It’s been very interesting to see what they make of our stock, and what they’ve been able to recommend for our customers. Being ‘vegan’ used just to be shorthand for ‘not eating fish as well as meat’, and perhaps, trying hard to find non-leather shoes. Nowadays, though, people calling themselves vegans tend to adhere to its strict definition, avoiding any use of animal products. For vegans, all dairy goods are out of the question, as is honey, or anything made with gelatin, for example. Like most vegans, our two staff members cook mostly from scratch, and use proper, wholefood ingredients to ensure they get the highest levels of nutrients. They love our wholefood range, encompassing every conceivable kind of grain, as well as rice, lentils, pulses, dried fruit, nuts and seeds. Click here to see our Wholefoods section. They’re keen to avoid products grown by intensive farming methods – as are we. Our organic products are certified as being grown in an environmentally friendly, sustainable manner, without artificial fertilisers and pesticides. Click here to see our full organic range (some of which is non-vegan). Our staff members say that, having been vegan for years and years, they’re no longer really looking for vegan ‘alternatives’: no ‘fake bacon’ for them! They concentrate on wholefoods, fresh fruit and vegetables, and herbs and spices to make tasty, healthy dishes. They are keen, though, on soya or nut milks where necessary. Click here to see our full range of useful milk alternatives (which does include goat and sheep milk, which obviously are not vegan). And they find it perfectly easy to substitute olive or sunflower oil for dairy cooking oils. We’ve got a great range of both of these oils, as well as innumerable others: safflower oil, anyone? Or pumpkinseed? Click here to view our full range of cold-pressed oils. For snacks, they find the new RawBite bars a great buy. These are suitable for vegans and packed with organic fruit and nuts. Click here to see what we offer from this range. Finally, vegans aren’t just vegan with their food – they make sure they’re not using products that have harmed animals anywhere else in their lives too, seeking out animal-friendly household cleaning goods and toiletries. We stock a wide range of animal-friendly goods in these categories: see our Faith in Nature, Ecoleaf and Bio D ranges, for starters. If you’re not sure if something is vegan or not, look for the UK Vegan Society sunflower logo, or the BUAV (British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection) mark, for British products. And read all labels properly and carefully…. It’s great being vegan, say our staff members – and much easier than it used to be (thanks, partly, to wonderful companies like us)! Restaurants and cafes are much readier to cater for vegans, or to explain how a dish is prepared and alter it as necessary. The one big remaining problem is apparently your typical British pub – where it can be hard to find something acceptable for vegans to eat. Take note, pub-owners – and get in touch if you need any of our products! The post What we offer vegans appeared first on Naturally Good Food. ift.tt/eA8V8J ift.tt/1yqucW2 January 16, 2015 at 08:33AM
