What will be the macro demographic trends underpinning business, government and culture over the coming decade? I put my views in a new 5-minute downloadable video called Business Beyond 2014 (see kpmg.au). The decade to 2024 will see an upsurge in kids 5-17, in Gen-Ys in household formation 30-44, and in boomer retirees 70-79. New business initiatives should be viewed through this demographic lens. Supplying or building schools, delivering affordable housing, or connecting somehow with medical technology are businesses to be in. The demographic segments that will flatline over the coming decade include the 20-somethings (get out of student housing) as well as the 50-somethings (sadly not a lot of competition for the beach house). And then theres the issue of how each rising segment will be transformed by the new generations: boomers will make the 70s hip; Gen Ys might look for an inordinate amount of government and social support for the arduous task of buying a house and raising a family (yes, its hard work!); and the new teenagers might surprise us all and actually be quite conservative because they have been raised in straitened times.
