What word is so bad that it can only be referred to by its first letter. Give me a break! If murder, molestation, rape, torture, genocide and blasphemy can be pronounced out loud ... if those and countless other negative words have their place in the English language, then why need the word nigger be banned? By giving it undo importance, we give it undo power. And the reality, our African American reality is that we use the word in a dozen different ways everyday in speech or thought. Rap Brown, The Lives and Loves of Mr. Jive Ass Nigger by Cecil Brown, Woman Is The Nigger Of The World by John Lennon, and Niggers Are Scared Of Revolution by the Last Poets are worthwhile, valuable works of art and information ... how can we allow ourselves to be duped into outlawing the word. ANY WORD. This madness took its current incarnation during the first O.J. Simpson trial when Prosecutor Christopher Darden proclaimed that nigger is the vilest word in the English language. The story of American history can not be told without using the verbal symbolism clearly bespeaking the feelings of its history makers. For White folk to use the word with passion, relish, gusto and fervor for hundreds of years ... and then to tell Black folks NOT to use the word, as defined and construed by Black folk is the height of folly and insult. It is not a magic bullet that renders me speechless and lifeless. It is not even a word specific to black folks. My dear mother, now 96, told me in the 1950s and 60s during my childhood that niggers come in all colors. Never have truer word ever been spoken. She went on to define a nigger as a selfish person.
