What would ratification of C189 mean for domestic employees working in Barbados? . It would call attention to the work which makes other forms of work possible . bring diginity to work which still remains undervalued, underpaid, invisible, not recognised and not respected . recognise domestic work as any other work and treat domestic workers in the same way as other workers under the legislation and international standards . give protection to domestics who are among the most vulnerable in the workforce . regulate their working hours and rest periods . establish the ability of domestic workers to defend their interests through trade unions and associations . provide domestic workers with decent work and employers with clear guidelines on their responsibilities to protect and safeguard the diginity of the domestic employee . make necessary amendments to the existing domestic Employees legislation(chapter 344), extending the current provisions to protect against illegal charges for food and lodging, eviction without notice, violence and abuse . ensure that domestic workers should have written contracts and in the case of migrant domestic, these should be issued along with a written job offer before they arrive to work in Barbados . protect the right of migrant domestic workers to keep their passports/identity documents and be protected against confinement during rest periods . protect migrant domestic workers by regulating the work of private recruiters and employment agencies, bringing an end to such practices as employer deductions to cover recruitment fees . regulate a decent minimum wage for domestic employees, thereby strengthening their economic power . provide a means of enforcing standards by providing an effective complaints mechanism which includes measures for labour inspections, the imposition of penalties and availability of other remedies given to other workers . protect domestic workers from violence and abuse and bring abusers to justice
