What would you do if you found yourself stranded in another country alone, without money, friends, or family? Most of us work very hard in our lives, doing whatever we can, to avoid some version of that possibility. For the last three days, after losing my passport, I have had the opportunity to experience a bit of that perspective. What I predict you would discover, between moments of overwhelm, panic, and disorientation, is an uncommon ability, born out of necessity, to rely upon the simple kindnesses of complete strangers. This might lead you to contemplate, as it has me, why and how we wall ourselves off from each other in so many ways, and how asking for help is one of the most beautiful gifts we can give another person.
