What you heard and see are merely just exaggerations about this delicacy..... sure its a duck embryo but the taste is far from disgusting , why? First of all its cooked, as you open the egg you will be asked to suck the juice which basically taste like a bland chicken stock no more than a tablespoon, thats all it is , really.. as for the yolk part , it taste just like your regular hard boiled chicken egg yolk but a bit more richer in taste, theres a white hard part that you cant eat since its rubbery tough. The challenging part is the duckling...depending on the stage /age when it was cooked, you can get something like formless chick to one with a well defined body....IT IS OPTIONAL for you to eat it if you find it gross just leave it... I am not crazy eating the chick too specially the more mature ones but then again you have missed out the challenge if you dont try it....so what would you expect eating that part?... its purely textural, its cartilegenous,... IT IS NOT at all obnoxious ...eating caviar and seaweed is more nasty than tasting the balut...AGAIN, dont be overwhelmed about the balut.
