What you see and hear in hospital ERs in the wee hours?....you hear wretching souls 2 cubicles away, whispering spouses reassuring one another about their dilemmas,..you hear moaning wounded, you see/hear drunken mouthy woman under police watch parked on gurney in the corridor.., you walk the halls to see people crying in huddles, families with a sick crying baby waiting for a space to occupy, you see poor souls that you only peek in at barely in passing that are in a wretched state of ill health, you eye senses the degree of misery instantly..you immediately are grateful for your own blessed health....you see handsome young men and women doing amazing dr/nurse/orderly things, like the one who attended my Dad who was not especially a perfect patient...(this young fellow had cute buns, many professionals are handsome and beautiful 20 somethings! )...I told him children prepared me (more or less) for this variety of caregiving...you see ERT personel hanging and waiting, ambulance drivers possibly waiting for a patient to transport to a back to a care facility, or jail! etc. the young professional listened to my Pa retell about his flying high altitude missions in ww2 and how THIS torture was much...worse!!. You see janitors wheeling carts with skill and purpose, you hear the banter at the nurses station, swap a story/recipe, you hear a helicopter shake the whole wing as it came in for a rooftop landing..prompting a silent prayer for someone, who has arrived in critical care mode. likely a auto accident..they land on the roof, but sound for a minute like they might hit the building instead... ...a hospital ER, a total HUB of activity at 1-5 AM on a Tuesday early AM...I thought it was a Saturday full moon, for the waiting room crowd there, (packed) that were hoping to be seen....Pa was fast tracked in, much to my relief, and his.....his age? I dont know why/how...gov picks up tab..perhaps that had something to do with it (medi-care). perhaps because I told intake exatly what he needed......the least trouble for systems of care billing wise...in fact...Ive sadly seen abuses of that very system in watchdoggin my Moms hospital stays......running up hours in ER to bill extra time, etc...last night, we were in and out in relative short time....I feel lucky, and blessed,...and tired. PS, PA, tough old guy veteran peacenik is doing ok for now...
