Whats in a Name? Over the last several years there has been a trend in the Reef Hobby to collect corals based on their given names such as Darth Maul, X-Men, Firecracker, Purple Monster and the list goes on. We here at Aquariums by Design have always gotten a kick out of this. Corals should be purchased based simply on whether you like them or not and if they are healthy. If you google different Coral names you will get dozens of different looking Corals under the same name. Many stores will mark up the price of their Corals significantly based on if it looks like a famously named Coral. Some will even give a Coral their own name in hopes to make more and they usually do. We also dont understand why so many people buy Corals based on how well they fluoresce under actinic lighting. We want our corals to look good during the day when we will be most often viewing them and not just in the morning and late at night when the tank is under heavy actinic lighting. So the next time your looking to purchase a Coral buy one you like, who cares if it has a fancy name. Below is a Safecracker Zoa and a Blueberry Fields Acro
