What’s perhaps more troubling was the willingness of the faculty and the Academic Senate at Grossmont to throw the adjuncts to the lions. Amusingly, in an act of extraordinary generosity the Academic Senate granted new titles to only 21 of the school’s 588 contingent faculty members. The Academic Senate obviously does not understand how to play “the new title game.” You actually have to give LOTS of people new titles if you want the scheme to work. Amateurs. Jerde provides another example where Middle Tennessee State University has proposed creating new titles for lecturers in addition to salary increases. MTSU has proposed increasing salaries ($6000-7000 per step) for lecturers with each new promotion. Unlike the Grossmont scheme which is incredibly cynical, MTSU’s plan actually may actually benefit contingent faculty.
