Whats in a name? When I was young I used to get beat up because I had a funny last name. It was something that embarrassed me on the first day of school... when the teacher would read roll call.. and then stumble trying to get my name to pass from her lips.... and my classmates would laugh. My name along with the fact that my Dad was a Pastor of a high profile church would even be more cause for getting beat up or ridiculed.... The neighborhood bullies would say How does your Dad get paid? Does he throw up the money from the offering plates in the air to God, and whatever comes down he gets to keep? I was born into a German family, and our last name was unique even to the German community. Sometime in the 40s my grandfathers brother Reuben, chose Gaines as a professional name to use as a radio announcer. My uncle Ron followed in the 60s as a jazz entertainer. I chose the Gaines name in the 70s thinking of rock stardom and practiced writing my autograph over and over on my notebooks while I daydreamed of becoming famous... So today, or rather for quite a few years now, I realize that I have lost my identity. I am not really Timothy Gaines, nor am I the person that was before. Most people (to my frustration) misspell my stage name as Gains (not Gaines,) And they would have really been thrown for a loop at my real name... which is Hagelganz. Yes, my real name is Timothy Hagelganz, and I am proud of it.
