Whats more Important Speed or Power ? I guess we can argue this - TopicsExpress

Whats more Important Speed or Power ? I guess we can argue this forever in Boxing, but if you take the time to evaluate the Greatest of All Time Boxers, in each and every weight class, my guess would be Speed has the edge. Muhammad Ali, Larry Holmes, Sugar Ray Robinson, Sugar Ray Leonard, Roy Jones Jr, Floyd Mayweather Jr, and the list could go on had blinding speed. Not only with there hands but with there ability to out maneuver there opponents in ring generalship, and lateral movement, that prevented you from ever getting set to land enough power shots throughout the Fight, to come away with the win. Oh you might hurt them, and punish them with those Bombs, but more often than not the one who possesses Speed as opposed to Power, appears to have the edge throughout the history of Boxing. If you take the time to just carefully examine Muhammad Alis and Larry Holmes careers, how many times would you come up with brutal punchers such as a George Foreman, Earnie Shavers, Sonny Liston, Cleveland Williams, Ron Lyle, or a Joe Frazier, and what are the end results ? The majority and sometimes trilogy of fights go to the one who has the Superior Speed. There are a lot of ways that Speed can be gauged to nullify Power. You couple Speed with a solid ability to take punishment, and that can turn you into one of the Greatest Boxers who has ever lived. Boxing has evolved over the past several decades and the old historical stand and Bang it out theory leads to a shorter career in Boxing. Of course not every fighter will be so blessed to have those God given natural reflexes and turn to concentrate more on developing the power side of there arsenal. But if I had my choice, I will take Speed over Power.
