Whats new in the world of darts? The BDO World Trophy is a new event dreamed up by the BDO and the new commercial arm, BDO Events Ltd. The following is an excerpt from their news page: ~ A genuine world open darts competition for all, including professional and amateur players (Compliant with BDO Eligibility Rules) ~ Held from February 4th – 9th 2014 at Blackpool’s Iconic Tower.. Utilising the entire venue for Knockouts right through to the Final. ~ 4th Ladies Knockout event held in the Tower Lounge and Circus ~ 5th Men’s Knockout event held in the Tower Lounge and Circus ~ 6th to the 9th Main event held in the World Famous Tower Ballroom ~ Top World (Grade A) ranking points ~ £115,000 prize fund – the second largest behind the Lakeside World Championships ~ Participation from the world’s top ranked players: ~ 7 qualifiers ~ 14 top ranked BDO professional darts players. ~ Winners of the Lakeside & Winmau Masters ~ 8 players from around the World representing the USA, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, Eastern Europe, Western Europe, Asia & Scandinavia and Baltic regions ~ 1 Wild Card Player ~ 8 top ranked ladies & 8 qualifiers ~ Schedule, Qualifiers, and full details to follow So, the BDO is turning commercial too! I guess after seeing the success from the other camp the BDO cant just sit on their laurels and hence the birth of The BDO World Trophy. Thats not it, Darts fans! Theres yet another new-born, another surprise .... THE SUPER SERIES (again this is an excerpt from their news page) ~ A new and exciting Super Series for the best 12 players in the world ~ Taking place from July to September across the country ~ The much anticipated climax to the BDO season ~ A series of round robin league matches between the top ranked players ~ Weekly one night events running over 10 weeks ~ Culminating in a grand final ~ The BDO Super Series will be competed for by: ~ The winners of: - The Winmau Masters - The World Championships (Lakeside) - The BDO World Trophy - And the next top ranked players not qualifying as a result of winning a “Major” Now what do you guys think about these events? If you are a true fan of the sport do you welcome these events with open arms or do you see it as a commercial abuse coming from a non-profit organisation whose prime function it is to promote darts? A genuine world open darts competition for all is the first point, which I suppose is the main attraction to all darters, but how open is world open when the rest of the world is split into 8 regions for 8 qualifiers from around the world ... If you want your comments read, please keep them respectable. Thank you.
