Whats the connection between Putin and Gaza? Kerry met with reps from Hamas, Turkey, and Qatar in Paris over the weekend. He is deferring to their wishes to make Qatar the home of negotiations with Hamas and Israel. Why? Because of Putin. Qatar is a tertiary player in the ME and will do anything to become a primary one. It has had plans for years now to create the Qatar-Turkey natural gas pipeline. Putin has Germany and the industrial powers of the EU in his palm right now. Because of his resources in natural gas. The Qatar-Turkey line would obviate the need for Putin. This fact explains the visits between Merkel (the EU de facto leader) and Obama recently. They came to a consensus yesterday. And are now openly opposing Putin, which Merkel did not want to do hitherto. Over the weekend Kerrys people visited Kirkuk, listened to witnesses, and then issued a report that stated the opposite. The US will not do anything about ISIS. Why? They promise to create stability for the Qatar-Turkey line. The chief concern of the US right now is Putin. The Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt and Hamas are on board with Qatar and Turkey. Qatar and Turkey are the ones who fund Hamas. The heads of Hamas, who are billionaires, have mansions in Qatar. Turkey is in turn strongly supporting Hamass fight against Israel. The government is sponsoring vociferously anti-Zionist messages. This is why Sisi and Bibi and Abbas are coming together to oppose Hamas. The new alignments are fascinating. But the situation is very volatile. Israel can protect itself in the region. But if things get out of hand, we will have a geopolitical conflict of the likes of the early 20th century. With rampant antisemitism in the world, Jews are in very precarious situation. The little conflict in Gaza is nothing. Israel could flatten the entire strip in three hours if it wanted to. My friends who work in international relations are worried about much bigger things. Diplomacy and geopolitics are about strategic interests and esp. the security of your own people. Its not about fairness and humanitarianism, contrary to American ideals. It would help us all in our moralizing disputes to recognize this basic fact.
