Whats the main reason hypertension increases with age? Because 9 out of 10 Americans dont drink enough water. Its called Essential Hypertension, which means its idiopathic and we dont know why it is. But we know exactly why it is. Not enough water leads to a low volume state (hypovolemia), which causes vasoconstriction throughout the body, via norepinephrine release from the solitary nucleus of the medulla and the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system in the kidneys. Chronic increased vasoconstriction via the low volume state leads to narrowing blood vessels, aka, renal stenosis, coarctation of the aorta, pyloric stenosis, aortic stenosis, etc, etc, which leads to hypertension.
