Whats the most effective way to act in the world? The way that will always best get you what you want, no matter what it is you want, no matter what situation youre in, no matter what beliefs youre relying on? One might answer: Select the action that will have the best effects. Or: Act like the kind of person you wish you were. Whats perhaps surprising is that these two answers, when formalized, yield very different decision theories. They give incompatible recommendations about how to act. You have to choose between acting right in the sense of picking the action that makes the right thing happen, and acting right in the sense of being the right kind of agent. And the latter, not the former is closest to being domain-generally optimal, effective, rational, etc.
