Whats wrong with a cowboy in Hamburg? Jurgen Kneipers by turns anxious and esoteric score seals the perfect European accent of modernism and tradition in this 1977, and for me the best film version of Patricia Highsmiths Ripley novels. Before Paris, Texas, Wenders movies strength lay in their Old World perspective, despite his love of American Pop culture, and in this one the Hamburg waterfront and Paris Metro are so well rendered you can smell them, and correspondingly makes Bruno Ganz first, bumbling hit uncomfortably real. This is Dennis Hopper, an icon of pop culture, hitting the New York street with a watery World Trade Centre backdrop in the opening credits, before the film moves suddenly to a picture-framers workshop in Germany.
