Whats wrong with the US guidelines? Were particularly horrified that they advise high-carb eating patterns and lots of PUFA oils (e.g., corn, canola, safflower), despite an abundance of solid evidence linking these to chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity. Meanwhile, they completely ignore hard science (embraced by the nations top cardiologists and the American College of Cardiology, among others) that consuming saturated fat DOES NOT cause heart disease but DOES have major health benefits. The US guidelines: 1. Have contributed to the increase of chronic diseases. 2. Have not provided guidance compatible with adequate essential nutrition. 3. Represent a narrow approach to food and nutrition inconsistent with the nation’s diverse cultures, ethnicities, and socioeconomic classes. 4. Are based on weak and inconclusive scientific data. 5. Have expanded their purpose to issues outside their original mandate.
