Whats your opinion...would you show this movie to a group of 9 and 10 year olds? My son is 12, but unlike his classmates, hes emotionally younger and anxious about gross things. He watched a clip from this PG-13 movie in school for Language Arts. Then they compared the clip to the book to discuss which had more impact. Its chapter 18 from the book, where Gus calls Hazel to come help him at 2:30 in the morning because hes left his parents house to go get cigarettes, and hes really, really sick. Gus has a G-tube, but its infected, but he needs to put medicine in it, and he doesnt want to go to the hospital. He throws up all over himself in his car, and Hazel ends up calling an ambulance to take him to the hospital anyway. He used his pressure pass to get out of watching most of the video, and then was unable to do the assignment because he was so grossed out. I helped him last night get through at least part of this assignment, and cope with the anxiety. We discussed all sorts of happy topics, like cancer is, that everyone dies eventually, but not everyone who has cancer dies from it. We discussed martyrdom fantasies, and hallucinations, and why Gus doesnt want to go to the hospital. We discussed that sometimes life is really gross, and when you love someone, and theyre really sick and gross, you love them so much that you get over the gross and help them anyway. He went to bed feeling better. I went to bed pissed off! Im really glad that I didnt start sending emails last night. I made notes, and that was plenty to get me riled up again. So, now, its after 6am, Ive been writing emails since 4. Ive called for an IEP review, gotten the doctors and therapists involved, asked for help from a friend with lots of IEP experience, and Im now scanning the assignment and my notes as future evidence. Really, I dont need a lot of general advice, I just need to rant a bit here. Sometimes screaming to the world that this is unfair and wrong is therapeutic. Opinions about the appropriateness of this curriculum are helpful. Hugs and love are extremely helpful. imdb/video/imdb/vi1268034329/
