What’s In A Name? When I meet people for the first time, they - TopicsExpress

What’s In A Name? When I meet people for the first time, they are likely to call me by an incorrect name. I have been Sammy, the most often used name is Samuel, and I think I may have been called Samson once. But it’s just Sam. And, no, I have never tried green eggs and ham. It’s a name that has been passed down from my grandfather, to my father, to me, and I gave my oldest son this name. However, in passing along our name, we must ask what are we giving? To be a Sam in our family means to be a provider, a protector, a hard worker, selfless, and an exceptional joke teller. Being Sam is to be community minded, a scholar, to always try your best, and always have God at the center of all you do. Sams are also required to be loving husbands and awesome fathers. But what is in a name? What does YOUR name mean? The Bible tells us, in Proverbs 22:1, that “A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold.” To be esteemed or respected relies on our conduct and how we carry ourselves. Our actions and our character, good or bad, become associated with our names. While we are being mindful of projecting a good image of ourselves, we must also understand that we are also a representation of God. And His name is one that should be honored above all others. So when people hear your name do they frown? Do they laugh? Do they go silent for fear of saying something bad? Many of our mothers taught us to do this when we can’t say nice things about someone. The point of all of this is that your actions and character determine how your name is perceived and received. And if your actions and character are not lined up with Jesus and the love He showed for us all, you will fall short on the respect we seek from others. SO 10/2/2013
