“What’s the buzz about bugs?” was the topic of discussion and the presentation at the dbsaa Flora & Fauna AG class on Thursday 27th November 2014. The children were introduced to the Phylum - arthropod; Class – insect, discussing the anatomy, characteristics of insects, how insects rule the world, the metamorphosis and the importance of insects to humans in production of honey, ink & silk among other items. The conclusion of the presentation was “Entomophagy” - The practice of eating insects, where it was noted that: · 80% of the world’s cultures eat insects · Insects require such fewer resources in terms of food, water, and land space · Insects are a great, inexpensive, green source of the protein desperately needed by starving people. · We should consider promoting the use of insects as human food and as animal feed in assuring food security. We then prepared a mealworm stir fry, which was thoroughly enjoyed by the instructors.Sincere thanks to Maurizio Melloni for sharing his knowledge and skills at the lesson.
