What’s the most unique infestation that Sales Person of the Week Mel Whitson has encountered on the job?: “There was a classroom in a school that was overrun with fleas. No pets or animals in the classroom….eventually the carpet were removed and the entire class was moved to a portable classroom because of the infestation. I arrived for an inspection with the PCO and interviewed the teacher. The problem was located in the back corner of the room where the teacher claimed ‘if you walk back there, you will be covered with fleas!’ In the back corner I observed spider webs inundated with fleas in the corner where a built-in bookcase protruded from the exterior wall. More careful inspection revealed pine straw coming out of internet cable runs, a potential animal nest in the built-in bookcase. I asked the teacher if they had heard any “animal” noises and she recalled hearing “squirrels” several months back in the bookcase! Though she hadn’t heard them recently, animals will abandon nests/burrows when the fleas become unbearable. With absence of a host, they will remain in their pupal cases (we call this the “pupal window”) until stimulated. So every time someone came within several feet of this area, newly emerged fleas would attack. We pried the book case open and revealed an extensive abandoned squirrel nest. We removed the nest and treated the inside of the bookcase with Precor 2000 Plus. Shortly thereafter carpet was re-installed and the classroom was put back into service. This was a good case study where knowledge of our products and pests swiftly determined an outcome.”
