When Abe, the doperman as we called him, passed away I started - TopicsExpress

When Abe, the doperman as we called him, passed away I started looking for another dog. I didnt have to look long, in fact, all I had to do was look out my window - and there he was, sitting on our lawn on a cold December day staring at the house, his mouth open, smiling, highlighting that purple tongue. After some trepidation realizing he was part chow, and taking 3 hours to get him to come inside, and seeing he wasnt going to kill the other pets or 4 year old Rae (that would be the golden retriever half) - we kept him. Moving to Shepherdstown, hed walk with me, leash free (sorry Chief), and was friendly to every man and beast he met on the street. He understood hand signals somehow when crossing the street, but never pulled when on a leash. Hed smile. It was the coolest thing when he did it, and he did it often. He ended up on the Shepherdstown dog calendar several years ago - smiling. He kept me company in the garden, as long as it wasnt to hot, to cold, to windy, or wet. If it was, then hed just walk back home, go through the alley gate, and back inside the house. He was worried about me as I went through my treatments. He had a great bladder. Except when it thunder stormed, or the wind blew hard, then hed march into our bedroom and pee on our bed. He didnt destroy much, except somehow he seemed to know when to dig up the flower bed in the courtyard just before they bloomed. He didnt get loose to often, but when he did hed end up at the Lost Dog (irony inserted here), or by the tracks gnawing on a over ripe deer carcass -(that was just lovely for a week afterward....), once we had to bail him out of doggie prison, before the locals knew who he was and would bring him home. He LOVED cashews and cheese. Its always hard to know when to let an old friend go, but after discussing the seizures with the very best vet, ever, anywhere, I decided it would be in his best interest and quality of life, to let him go. He was surrounded with love, hugs, pats, and kisses from Chris and me, on his comfy bed, as he slipped away. What a wonderful thing we can do for our pets. Thank you to Chris Harry B Crawford for rearranging your schedule to go with me this morning. And to everyone for your well wishes and flowers/cards - so sweet. Rachael Harasink, Gary Harasink, Isaac Shane Crawford (Maxies Pad), Khellar Crawford, Amy Dawson Robertson, Kendra Tolley, Bart Robertson and my mom - he loved you guys. Thanks to Bob Watson, Natalia Cummings, Kelly Kowalski, Bernardine Somers, Amy Danielle, Rebecca Moore,, Caitlin and Phil, and others Im forgetting who took such wonderful care of him. And to all of my clients who let Max hang out in the treatment room.. Sleep well old friend, see you on the other side..
