When Bayern turned to Guardiola after Heynckes retired in 2013 van - TopicsExpress

When Bayern turned to Guardiola after Heynckes retired in 2013 van Gaal commented, “Guardiola follows the van Gaal philosophy, so I’m not surprised Bayern have hired Guardiola,” he said. “Bayern always hire the best managers.” And this is the nub of van Gaal, really. He has the arrogance of Jose Mourinho, the megalomania of Alex Ferguson, the fanaticism of Pep Guardiola and the manners of Sam Allardyce. By rights he should be one of most revered coaches in history, having created one of the greatest sides in recent history and inspired two more. But nobody’s opinion of him, however high, will ever match up to van Gaal’s opinion of himself. Cruyff once said he has one or two screws loose. Manchester United fans are now finding out if that’s true.
