When God created the world, he set aside one day in seven for rest. If God had the foresight to do this, it must have been important. Let that word roll off your tongue…r-e-s-t. Most of us have no clue what rest is. We live life at such a frenetic pace that we rarely shut down to recharge our batteries. We are involved in work, activities for the kids, we serve at church, we are busy trying to have a social life and our vacations stress us out more than our jobs. The dictionary defines rest as ceasing from stress or strenuous activity but I believe that it is much more. Rest is a kind of repose that comes from knowing that we have set the right priorities for our lives, that we are striving for the right goals and that we are not busy trying to change things that we cannot change. Jesus Christ said Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.” That rest is not the absence of activity but the calm assurance that we have placed our trust in the right person. In this life, we have a “burden bearer”. He does not do everything for us…just those things we are unable to do for ourselves. Today, let go of your concerns about your health. Eat well and exercise…that’s your part. Stop worrying about your marriage…be the best partner you can be…that’s your part. Make today a “chill out day” in the Lord.
