When I am teaching a push up or a chin up to a novice I will use Eccentrics (working from 3-30 seconds). Girls especially need to work on eccentrics for difficult movements (chin up, pull up, squat etc) as this will help them increase muscle mass and help them to perform the full movement. When in the Eccentric phase you are 20% stronger than the concentric phase. This will allow you to build more muscle when eccentrics are done properly. Try work your way up to a 8 sec eccentric on a compound movement like the squat and I guarantee you youll be sore for a while. https://youtube/watch?v=xSvle6p-i14
