When I built my drum I used pipe nipples and caps. I secured the nipples with conduit nuts on the inside of the drum. Over the years, the conduit nuts began slipping and made it difficult to get the caps off without using 2 pairs of pliers. One to hold the nipple and one to unscrew the cap. My solution was to remove the nipples and replace them with 3/4 conduit hubs. Needle nose pliers will pull the plastic insulated sleeve out. They have a really substantial nut that can be cranked down nice and tight and a rubber washer to help it seal for even better (like you need it) airflow control. Once the hub is in place just screw a galvanized iron plug in instead of using a cap. Its about $20 for all the parts and well worth it in my opinion. Ive been using them for about a year. There is a little corrosion because it sits in the elements. I just keep a cheap open end wrench out by the Drum. Just wanted to share.
