When I discuss or think about the avant-garde in poetry I enter - TopicsExpress

When I discuss or think about the avant-garde in poetry I enter the same state of mind as when I become intensely charming at a party, then in the morning I am depressed and I feel alone. WHEN did we decide that poetry should be political? I do not think I know anybody who got hooked on poetry because it showed off the difference between spoken and written texts, for example...I got into poetry because it made me feel both excited and becalmed...but there are few, if any, critics who promote a poetics of happiness, entertainment, homeostasis, thrill, or spirituality...although that is why many of us read and write it. WTF? Nobody talks about liturgy as a tool for political offense. Why should poetry shoulder an avant-garde when prayer and other transcendent rites do not?
