When I dropped my car at the Executive Carport at OR Tambo the - TopicsExpress

When I dropped my car at the Executive Carport at OR Tambo the other day, a friend was surprised the people there knew my car by name: Velabahleke. Hawu Mr Zungu uqhuba uVelabahleke namhlanje. (YOU ARE DRIVING VELABAHLEKE TODAY) Africans are fond of giving names to all things that they attach value to. Simply because we value livestock, especially cattle, there tends to be a lot of creativity in the naming of cows. I can readily recall at least 20 unique names of my late maternal grandfathers cows that we grew up to herd: Guluva, Bhaylami, Mtshekuli, Waylense, Gidani, Thiza, Volo, Tshanbezwe, Mtafula, etc. On the contrary, we do not attach too much importance to guard dogs (as distinct from hunting dogs), hence we are happy to be less creative, and simply recycle names: Spottie, Danger, Rex, etc. Just these three names account for more than 75% of dogs at Umlazi... The same goes for cars. People would give names to their favourite cars: Ntombencane, Ntombemhlophe, Mhlophekazi, Ntombenhle. Most cars tend to be given names with a prefix: Ntombi. Reason? Your guess is as good as mine, but we ride cars, dont we? I named my black sedan Njandini because its an NJDxxxGP. When my mom saw my new white car last December, she was so overawed, she named it Velabahleke. Essentially, anything of value is given a name: a taxi (Khuzokhuzekayo); bus (Zigizendoda)... Our neighbour at Gwegwede, KwaHlabisa, a certain Mr Mhlongo - a very proud polygamous man and a local induna, had isidlaliso (NICKNAME) for his youngest wife, uMaNxumalo (Nomsamo); a name for his homestead (Khethokwakhe) and for his rondavel (Phelukusa); a name for his favourite dog (Fakazi) and for the tree in the yard that offered him the best shade (Mphelandaba). Even his favourite knobkerrie which he carried everywhere he went had a name - Susinkungu. He even gave himself a heroic name - Mbhudubezi. When he had a few litres too many of ingqothovu (MATURED SORGHUM BEER), he would sing his own praises, Susinkungu in hand and Fakazi a safe distance from inkundla (DANCING CIRCLE): Hebe! USuthu! Wagiy uMbhudubezi kaNjomane owabhudubez uNomsamo, itshitshi lakokaZwide walithwala ngeqoma wayoliphosa kwaKhethokwakhe, lithe liqamba liphaphama lase lilelamanqeshana kwaPhelukusa. Hebe! Usuthu...
