When I first became interested in Libertarian ideas, I started following several facebook groups and pages about the problems government causes. That was a few years ago. I see multiple headlines every day are completely new to me and completely appalling. Then, of course, updates on most of the stories over time. Ive been really shocked by how frequent and obvious police abuse is and how little is done about it. SWAT raids often kill innocent people at wrong addresses, Sometimes police keep beating people after they are hog tied or handcuffed even when they arent resisting. I see a huge variety of the types of abuses. As for the outcome of such abuse: Sometimes they are put on administrative leave and then go back to work like nothing happened. Sometimes they get fired and probably go on to do similar work somewhere else. Seldom are the prosecuted for the crimes they committed like they would have been if they werent a cop. When they are, their sentences seems ridiculously light compared to their crimes. The worst part is that it is almost never pointed out in the mainstream media. Ferguson, MO pointed out the militarization of police, but its pretty much already blown over. Most people I know think Im kind of a fruit-loop for suggesting that theres a problem or that its serious. So if the long-term goal is to get government fixed (and I realize that there are various definitions of that in this group) then could there be a short term goal of some kind to restrain behavior of officers and punish them when they do abhorrent things? I havent heard of any bills being pushed forward to correct this problem. Where would one start? Is there any hope of at least passing a bill with the intent of increasing public awareness even if you think the bill itself wouldnt serve any other purpose? Thoughts? Just please dont spend the next hour telling me what a piece of crap I am for thinking there might be a purpose for working within the system. I just think that anything that brings some public awareness and might help even a little might save a life or two.
